Finally some pictures! This is one of the 8" x 16" commissions... The other 8" x 16" commission... These next pictures show the progression of the childrens hospital commission... This one is me using a palette knife to apply a lot of gesso and then I smooth it out with a large paint brush. The gesso... The finished canvas with two coats of gesso on the front and all the sides...after this I layout the painting in a pencil drawing and then start with the paint. There will be more progress pictures and then the final painting just as soon as I get it finished.

I have 3 commissions to work on this week...two 8"x16" landscapes, and a 26" x 32" painting similar to one I've done in the past. The 26"x32" is for a childrens hospital unit for cancer and blood disorder patients. I'm thrilled to be able to do a painting that might help lighten the day of a child who's ill and stuck in a hospital.
I've finished the two landscapes and will post pics sometime today...the other painting is in progress and I have some pics of the first stages that I might post today or tomorrow. I actually stretched the canvas for the hospital painting which I don't always get to do because its time consuming and expensive, but it turned out really great. The stretcher bars are 1 1/4" thick and the canvas is a good quality heavy thickness that I coated with a couple coats of primer. It looks amazing and I'm very excited! So I'll be posting some pics in a few hours...now off to paint : Well I've got a lot coming up...I need to take better pics of my previous posts and my new work, especially the two landscapes. Its so hard to get a painting to look as good on the computer as it does in person :( its about finding the right lighting I think...also, I have a month long show at Wind Water and Light Gallery in Urbana this Oct. so all my paintings need to be touched up and ready to go for Oct...the Urbana farmers market this weekend where I will have at least one new landscape to show...and possibly Penrod art fair in Indianapolis Sept. 10th.
I will keep blogging new paintings, works in progress, and anything else interesting I come across, so check back soon :-) -Lindsey Here is a still life I just completed...it is 24"x36" oil on stretched canvas. There are oranges of course, a vase of flowers, some dishes, dish towels, plates, and anything else you might interpret :) Sometimes people find "stuff" in my work that I never meant to be there, or don't really see, but that's ok...I think it makes my work very interesting and fun.
In this painting I tried to work mostly with blues and add the pops of orange, yellow, and white. The purple is subtle enough and close enough to the blue family that it doesn't stand out too much...which is good. If I were to do any more colors, it would become too busy and not look right. I think this came out good :-) I've decided to try something a little different, and do some landscapes with thicker paint application and a slightly different style. I'm still going to keep my still life paintings with the circular layouts, I just love how they look, but I think the landscapes needed to be changed up a bit. I've been trying to find a way to make fun, bright, landscapes and steer away from the traditional style and coloring, while at the same time not going too modern or abstract. My goal is to create something that will brighten up the home, that just brings a lightness to life, that I would hang on my own walls and I think that's what I got...I'm very happy with this new direction. I never really understood the need for dark, traditional artwork...its just not my thing...I hope you like this! There will be plenty more to come! :) I just finished up the Broad Ripple art fair last weekend and enjoyed very much...albeit we had a bad storm on Sunday which damaged a lot of tents and a lot of art. I was in my tent with 3 others, hanging on to the tent frame while the 60mph winds and hail battered the fair. You could hear glass breaking, and my neighbors tent actually blew into the back of mine. Luckily I didn't have any damage, so I guess all is well...oh, and a BIG Thank You to the 3 wonderful visitors that stayed with me and helped hold down the tent.
When the storm hit and I saw my neighbors with the super fancy, most expensive, and heavily weighted tent that didn't even sway in the initial first gusts, ditch their tent and run for safety in the art center, I started to question my decision to stay and hang on....after all, isn't my tent with its metal frame a giant lighting rod, a flimsy piece of metal that could easily be twisted in knots if thats what the storm wanted to do with it. So perhaps in the future it would be wise to run to shelter when I see an ominous black cloud heading my way...I'll try to keep that in mind :) Besides the weather, it was a great show and thanks to everyone that came out! Below I have some pictures of the tent that was blown into the back of mine, the one on its right is damaged as well. I also have pics of my new work that I just finished... Can you believe it? My first still llife in quite some time...and I think I like it! Well, its been a while since my last post...I've been painting of course and getting everything together for the show I'm at this weekend, Queeny Park in St. Louis. So far its been a great show and I've met a lot of very nice people. I'm looking forward to tommorrow, it should be a good day. Below are some photos of the show so far. I also wanted to announce that I will be showing some of my work through Bluestone Gallery in Pittsburgh PA. The gallery is set to launch in May and there is a countdown on their website for the opening...http://bluestone-gallery.com/soon/ . I'm looking forward to this partnership...I hope it will be a successful venture for both of us! I have a lot of new art fairs I'll be participating in this summer listed on my art fair schedule page. If you have any questions about any of these events, email me and I might have coupons or flyers I can send to you. Its turning out to be a very busy summer! Spring Bloom turned out to be a great show for me! I think I slept from 1am to 3am Friday night then got up to drive to the show and get set up....so it ended up being a pretty long day by the time I tore my booth down, got packed up and drove all the way home...but it was all worth it and I met some really nice people. So thank you to everyone that came out and bought some of my work and for all the lovely feedback I received, I really appreciate it!!! Hopefully I will see everyone again in July at the Sugar Creek Art Festival. On another note, I just got some more acceptance letters for shows this summer, so my art fair schedule page has been updated again. Some photos from the show- Well I finally got some new work done and photographed and its all been added to my etsy shop as well as my paintings page here on my website. I hope you check it out! This week I'm trying to pull everything together to get ready for my first show of the season...I've got my new business cards in, my tent is finally done, paintings are all wired and signed, my price cards are (almost) done, and my truck is clean and ready to be loaded down with the mess of "stuff" I have to pack with me. So now I just have to get myself up on Sat. at 3:30 am and get to the show on time. This is just a one day show too, so we end up setting up and tearing down in the same day which is usually quite draining...anyways, besides all that, I am actually looking forward to it....and hopefully it will be a great start to the art fair season! Please check back soon...I will try to post some photos of the show and new work, etc. |
